Excursion from “Su Cumpudadorgiu” to Cala LunaStarting point: “Su Compudadorgiu”, (Altopiano di Margine, Baunei)
Description: From Baunei, drive North along the state road 125 and turn right at km 169.5 to enter a dirt road that leads to the Plateau Margine. Continue on this road for about 14 km to the locality “ Punta Margiane”;we highly suggest to be driven up to this point (see the contacts below).
The departure is from Su Cumpudadorgiu where the start of the trail is well marked by a sign. The altitude is 630 m a.s.l. and the path stretches toward East through “Murreddu”’forest, allowing to reach the beautiful “Bidonie” valley. Walking along an old cartway used for transporting coal, you are able to reach the limestone hills overlooking “Codula de Luna”, (the canyon which leads to Cala Luna) where, if you are lucky and look carefully is possible to catch sight of small herds of mouflons.
After about an hour hiking leave the main path and head to a narrower turnoff on the left (560m a.s.l.) and after 100 meters reach the huts of “Onamarra”; first you see two old huts, then, nearby a new one. It was built in 1953 together with a connected hut whose entrance is situated East.
Keep going and arrive in front of “S’Archittu de Lopiro” (big rock arch) from which you can have a view of the Orosei’s gulf. After about 3 hours from the starting point you finally reach the breath-taking Cala Luna with its clear sand mixed to pebbles. Steep rock walls and wide caves surround the seashore:, perfect to seek shade during the hot summer days. This piece of nature had been chosen as the set for the movie “ Travolti da un insolito destino nell’azzurro mare d’agosto” (Swept Away… by an Unusual Destiny in the Blue Sea of August ) in its first version of 1974 with Mariangela Melato and in the english language remake with the popstar Madonna in 2002.
The beach, with its crystal-clear water offers few facilities: you can find a bar and restaurant not so far and it is characterized by a shallow seabed ideal for children to play safely.
